Dominance & submission (D/s)

Dominance and submission, often shortened to D/s, describes a consensual dynamic in which one partner takes a leading, directing role and the other willingly yields. It is the power-exchange heart of BDSM, and it can be playful, sensual or deeply involved.

The exchange is always negotiated and, crucially, given rather than taken. The submissive partner consents to follow; the dominant partner accepts the responsibility of leading with care. Many note that the submissive ultimately holds the real control, through consent and the safe word.

D/s dynamics range from a brief scene to an ongoing arrangement. Whatever the depth, they rest on trust, clear limits and attentive aftercare — the dominant partner's care for the submissive's wellbeing is part of doing it well.

Frequently asked

Who really has the power in D/s?

Power is exchanged by consent. Many say the submissive holds ultimate control, since they set the limits and can use a safe word at any time.

Is D/s always sexual?

Not necessarily. Some D/s dynamics are sensual or psychological and may include non-sexual elements, always by agreement.
